Crafting quality singing bowls

The alloy differs, influenced by local traditions and religion various metals were used. Singing bowls crafted in Buddhist dominated regions contain the 12 metals important in Buddhism. There are 7 planet metals: gold, silver, quicksilver, copper, iron, tin, and lead, as well as 5 more metals: zinc, meteoric iron, bismuth, galena, and pyrite. Every alloy contains a small piece of an old bowl with all information embodied.

The liquid alloy is then cast into a thick disk. Still hot and glowing 4 craftsmen start driving the disc to a bowl with heavy hammers for a while then it goes back into the fire. These guys will need approximately 32 hours to finish driving a high quality singing bowl of about one kilogram weight.

Preparing the cast

The cast gets prepared
with 7 to 12 pure metals.

Recipies for the alloys are based on
traditional knowlegde and highly important.
The alloy
Casting the disc
Once the alloy is ready it is cast into a thick disc,
a bit more heavy than the bowl will be.
Singing bowls go back into the fire
20 to 90 times up to their size and
have to be forged while red-hot glowing.
Nealing the raw bowl
Driving the bowl
4 to 6 craftsmen are driving the
singing bowl in a perfect rhytm.
Some hours later it looks more and more
like a singing bowl forged nealing.
Shaping the raw bowl
Special finish
The master's special techniques grant
the details of shape and sound.
The singing bowl is nealed and quenched
several times to increase sound quality.
Neal and quench to improve sound
Abrading the singing bowl

until its surface is shiny.
